Movie Security: The Dark Knight Rises

Some of the best American films have focused on security, whether it be money or secret documents. This blog series will talk about the security questions posed in movies from flaws and or successes of specific security systems.

Earlier this week, we talked about The Dark Knight, which features a major bank robbery. The Dark Knight Rises is similar, except the villains use Bruce Wayne’s stock in his company to destroy Wayne Enterprises and take control of the city with the company’s assets. These assets, of course, include an energy source that can be used as a nuclear bomb.

The first scene including Mr. Wayne is when Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) breaks into Bruce’s safe to take his mother’s pearls. But as Bruce soon finds out, she dusted for finger prints and took his finger prints.

Bruce mentions to Kyle that the safe is uncrackable.  Perhaps Mr. Wayne should have been using some of our safes.

Later on, Kyle sells Bruce Wayne’s fingerprints to people associated with the main antagonist, Bane. Bane then infiltrates the Gotham City Stock Exchange. Where this occurs:

In the real world, this would be clearly attributed as fraud and Bruce Wayne’s “reckless stock trading” would be reversed because of common sense. Unfortunately for Wayne, this is not the real world and Bane is able to put Gotham City in lockdown with the nuclear bomb now in the villain’s hands.

So there are a few lessons here:

  • Make sure your safes are really uncrackable.
  • Don’t let someone steal your identity by keeping your fingerprints safe if someone can make trades on your behalf with them
  • Don’t let a madman take control of Army-level weapons and vehicles

We’re aware that you or your business is not as high profile as Bruce Wayne and Wayne Enterprises and that a super villain is not going to target your business.
